5/13/2023 0 Comments The emile of jean jacques rousseau![]() The downside of this is that there are some portions of this book (specially Book IV) that are heavily outdated nonetheless, with a sober hermeneutical attitude, one can somehow overcome these deficiencies to grasp a higher order of meaning underlying the whole of it (including the heavily time/place-specific context). ![]() Rousseau shows himself as a very passionate writer, one who's not afraid in taking stances about a wide range of issues. As Emile grows, the goal starts to become more and more clear, as grows the scope of criticisms and reform proposals. So the child must be raised free, equal to all others around him/her, and connected to all through bonds of natural fraternity. Throughout the text, readers are instilled to think on their own, to come to terms with a new way of thinking Man from its most profound roots, and how a child must be raised in conformity to nature (his/her nature, as Rousseau conceives it). It's through this experience that we start to grasp the scope of his criticisms, and the way he wants to prepare people for the coming of a new order. And what best place to start with than by educating people to be good citizens? So the philosopher conceives of a thought experiment where he plays the role of a tutor for more than 20 years of a young scholar named Emile. ![]() ![]() Rousseau wants to reform the state of the decadent human institutions of his time. ![]()

5/13/2023 0 Comments Breaking dawn book![]() ![]() Review: I know that a lot of people were disappointed by this Twilight series finale, and/or are up in arms over various aspects of Breaking Dawn. So, I'm offering an informal, mini-review, as spoiler-free as I can make it, with a goal of helping anyone on the fence to answer the questions: "should I read it or shouldn't I, given the polarizing reviews out there?". But this is a book that calls out more for discussion than for review. And I try very hard on my blog not to reveal details that will spoil anyone's reading of a book. ![]() Is my review going to be the thing that entices some particular reader to pick up the book, in the face of the media firestorm, and the 2400+ reviews already available on Amazon? It seems hardly likely. In truth, I don't see much point in reviewing this title at all. But I'm sure that my library will be more than happy to have a donated copy. And of course the day after I finished reading it, the publisher's copy showed up. It wasn't so much that I was dying to know how the series ended, but it was getting difficult not to read spoilers. But it hadn't come, and I finally purchased a copy. ![]() And then I knew that the publisher would be sending me a copy, so I waited a few days for that. While Desiree’s trajectory is rendered with tenderness, Stella’s decision to forge an existence in which she capitalises on her Caucasian features is the novel’s linchpin. Stella and Desiree’s struggles are elegantly and inventively echoed in the future challenges encountered by their children. Indeed, among the novel’s great technical accomplishments are the parallels it draws between characters’ experiences across the decades. With a brisk confidence, the narrative moves between periods, following the twins and their offspring from the 50s to the late 80s. Bennett’s second novel following 2016’s The Mothers largely occupies itself with the consequences of this radical move, which play out through the subsequent generation. Stella soon deserts Desiree, disappearing into a life in which she constructs a new identity and “passes” as white. ![]() As they make their perilous way in the Big Easy, their unity is unsettled.
